Episode 5

The Correspondent

Show notes

Sybil Van Antwerp is seventy-three, retired from a distinguished legal career, going blind, and conducting nearly every close relationship in her life by mail. The novel is built entirely from her letters. Full spoilers throughout. Content note: child loss and suicide.

Alex and Lindsey get into what the epistolary form does that scene-writing can’t, since you only ever see how people respond to events rather than the events themselves. They track Sybil’s failing eyesight as a figure for how little she sees herself, the unsent letters threaded through the book and who they turn out to be for, and the forty years of guilt sitting underneath the grief. Plus Harry, the bright and isolated boy whose correspondence with Sybil becomes a lifeline in both directions, and Rosalie, the one friend willing to tell her the truth.

They also disagree about the ending. One of them finds real freedom in Sybil’s late reckoning. The other can’t quite forgive how long it took, or stop reading the whole thing from Fiona’s side of it.

Plus: the full-cast audiobook, a love triangle at seventy-six, and another round of who’s punching up.

Cry count and ratings at the end.
